InTASC Standard Five: Content Application
The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues.
Applies content knowledge to a real world problem through interdisciplinary projects.
As an educator, I am aware the children understand topics differently based on the Funds of Knowledge in which they bring to class everyday. Student are more likely to understand a topic when they are able to relate the unit to their own life. During my lessons, students are able to practice real life situations and understand how each topic is related to them. They can apply their funds of knowledge through writing narratives. By allowing students to choose the topic, they can express their creativity through writing.
To meet this standard, I encourage students to participate in class, and small group discussions. A goal in which I set at the beginning of the year is for the class to have student led discussions and practice their communication skills. Using tools such as Smartboards, computers, and ipads, the students are able to engage in various technological practices to expand their horizons.
Supports development of diverse social and cultural perspectives.
Students are able to use their literacy skills in other subjects by reading and writing in other subjects. Students were to make a planet journal in which they watched, read, researched the planets, and created a book to represent their new found knowledges.
Creating posters allows for students to practice literacy skills and display them on a poster board. I enjoy letting the students to decorate the classroom and the hallways as to show off their work. Displaying student work throughout the classroom and school makes the students want to come to school and creates an environment to encourage and value learning.
Develops and supports leaner literacy across content areas.
